Meet Legal Entrepreneur Evelyn Ackah
Are you asking yourself… Can I be a successful lawyer and business owner - and still have a life?
After years of law school followed by over 20 years practicing law, I know that being a successful lawyer doesn’t equate to being a successful entrepreneur. Some of the best lawyers I know are struggling to make their law firm profitable - and I’ve met some very good business people who aren’t successful lawyers.
After practicing big law for 10 years, I knew there had to be another way. In 2010 I launched my own law firm - and became a single mother. And I’ve never looked back. I now do what I do best, my way and on my own terms.
Flexibility is critical to build a profitable law firm and have a healthy personal life. From my personal experience as a mother and entrepreneur, I know that women have the flexibility and management skills to maintain a healthy work / life balance while building a business. Law is still a very traditional field - but there are new, innovative ways of practicing law and running a law firm that are ideal for legalpreneurs that allow for flexibility and creativity. In my firm with both the economy crash in downturn in 2017 and the economic crash caused by the 2020 global pandemic, I learned how to pivot and shift - and rapidly change my legal practice to continue growth and profitability.
As a successful entrepreneur and business owner who launched her first business in 2010, I am often asked for mentoring and strategic advice by other lawyers and business owners, particularly women of colour. My law firm often hires immigrant female lawyers and articling students to help them begin their legal careers.
I’m proud to be an award-winning lawyer. I have worked hard to develop an international reputation as a trusted expert source and am frequently quoted in the media and asked to comment on Canadian and international immigration issues for TV, radio and print media.
As an immigrant from Ghana, I’m committed to giving back to my community and serve on several international non-profit boards and donates time to the arts community in Alberta.
Are you asking yourself… How does she do it all - and how can I do it too?

Business Immigration Law
Ackah Business Immigration Law is a boutique immigration law firm based in Calgary, Alberta with offices in Vancouver and Toronto that serves clients from all over the world. Our team helps businesses and individuals cross borders seamlessly into Canada and the United States. After practicing immigration law for 10 years in a corporate law firm, I launched Ackah Business Immigration Law to focus on what I do best and to do it my way and on my own terms. I started a law firm that allowed me to bring all of myself to the office every day and that allows others to be themselves as well.
Corporate immigration is about people - and the businesses that hire them. We transform lives by creating immigration opportunities for people to live their dreams, expand their businesses and create a legacy for future generations.
As an immigrant from Ghana, I understand the immigrant process on a deep emotional level. I was 5 when I moved to Canada and met my Father for the first time (a very common immigration experience). I want to help others achieve their dreams of a new life in a new country.
I’m proud to say at Ackah Law we practice #HappyLaw! Our team works so hard for our clients because success means changing someone’s life forever.
